The potential dangers of using compatible toner cartridges

With current economic pressures and increasing prices, businesses and consumers are looking for more ways to save money. As a result, the sale of compatible printer consumables is increasing but many people are still unaware of the serious implications of using non-branded inks, toners and drums in their machines.   Will using cheaper compatible products invalidate my printer warranty? It depends. Using compatible consumables in your printer may not invalidate the warranty. However any damage caused to your printer by the use of third party consumables will not be repaired under the terms of the printer’s warranty. It is wise to check the manufactures website for warranty terms. How are compatible toner cartridges made? Some compatible cartridges are simply refilled – the casing is cracked open and refilled with new toner. Compatibles produced in this way are generally poor quality, unreliable and often lower capacity compared with branded cartridges. Refurbished cartridges are completely stripped down and rebuilt from scratch, using reconditioned components, or brand new ones where necessary. The cartridges are reassembled to the original manufacturer’s specifications and given a full load of toner; as a result, cartridges produced in this way can be at least equal in build quality to the originals. Three main risks with compatible toners: Leaking. These cartridges are normally a refilled genuine cartridges. Seals may not be as good as when the toner was originally filled. Damage to the fuser. If the cartridge has been refilled with toner that has different characteristics, the toner can stick on the fuser and other components. Drum problems with all-in-one toner/drum cartridges. This is relatively small damage to the printer... read more

BT’s Outage let down over 18,000 of their broadband customers.

Earlier this week DownDetector, a website that monitors service failures, reported more than 18,000 outages in 24 hours. The BT website went down temporarily and the website of Openreach, a subsidiary of BT Group that builds and maintains the copper and fibre network, remained down until mid-afternoon. Just as disappointing was BT’s explanation of the outage being caused by just one faulty router in their network – in fact we do not believe this to be a true explanation of the cause of the outage. Every other week, there seems to be news of businesses suffering from outages. Just last week, Twitter suffered an outage and this week BT. Unplanned outages can cost organisations a lot of money and even though it’s unavoidable, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s accepted or ignored. The downtime will usually have an impact on different areas of the business but usually they will be a massive impact on brand reputation and loyalty, both short term and long term.   Boffins are pleased to report that our Broadband customers were not affected though as we provide Internet Services through a 3rd party ISP. To avoid any further downtime from BT Broadband we recommend all customers of BT to switch to Boffins as your Broadband Supplier. Boffins can provide many different broadband services from standard ADSL, Superfast Fibre (FTTC), EFM and Leased Lines. Some of the many benefits of our broadband services are; Priority Bandwidth for business customers during working hours, Static IP addresses, UK based support, and comprehensive Service Level Agreements (depending on service.) Are your backups up to date?

Backing up your important data Why should you back up your data? Computer hard disk drives have a hard time, spinning around for eight hours or more a day, heating up and cooling down, experiencing the odd physical knock, constantly having data written or erased … and all of this happening inside a hot metal case with electricity coursing in all directions. It goes without saying that sometimes your drive is not going to survive this hostile environment. Recovering data from a hard disk which has failed is an extremely expensive process and it is unlikely that most businesses would want to pay for the attempted recovery of these files. As if the threat of hardware failure was not enough, you must also contend with the possibility of virus attack. There has been a surge in the number of e-mail viruses in recent months and there have been numerous instances where a lapse in concentration, or clicking a button on a dialogue box without reading the message displayed could be. Of course, you could disconnect your PC from the network, never use the Internet, and refuse to read any disks given to you by others. You would almost certainly remain virus-free but you wouldn’t be very productive at work. A safer alternative is to accept that computers will break down, and that being infected by a computer virus is a probability, so planning a means of minimising the effects of a malicious attack or system failure is a good idea. All this doom and gloom could be hard to take but, with a little planning and some time spent... read more
